No matter what you do, shoes will only last so long, but taking care of your shoes will help them to last longer than they would otherwise. A good pair of shoes can look and wear well for years if they are properly maintained and repaired. In fact, you may get tired of their style before they ever wear out.

Shoes of high quality do not come cheap, and it is necessary to handle them with care when you take them off. When you come home with dirt or dust on your shoes, wiping them off with a soft cloth is the minimum treatment they should be given. If the dirt is ingrained, or the texture of the shoes requires it, a brush might work better.

Special care should be taken after a walk in the rain. If your shoes get wet, you will need to take precautions to make sure they retain their shape and size. First, do your best with a dry cloth to get the moisture off of and out of the shoes. Then, put newspapers or rust-proof shoe forms in the toes of the shoes to preserve their shape.

Polishing your shoes and removing scuff marks as soon as they happen will help your shoes last longer, too. A special leather cream is available for leather shoes. You simply rub it on and wipe off what remains. It will not only make your leather shoes last longer; it will make them look great too. Scuff marks can be removed using toothpaste. You just put the paste over the blackened scuffed areas of your leather, canvas, or vinyl shoes and rub it on to remove the scuff. When you wipe it off, your shoes should look clean again.

For someone who walks constantly on their job, the upper part of the shoes may still be in great condition while the sole is showing wear. Shoes like this can be taken to a repair shop for resoling. If the heel is worn down, the repairperson will probably offer to put on full soles. These cover both the heel and the main part of the sole. If the heel is still in good condition, you might consider having half soles put on. This repair involves putting a new sole only on the main part of the sole.

If you want to avoid having to have your shoes wear down in the first place, you might think of the advantages of rubber heels and soles. Shoes often come with heel caps that are made of plastic. These heels can be uncomfortable, cause slips, and break easily. By taking your shoes to a shoe repair shop, you can avoid all the problems of plastic heel caps by having rubber ones put on. You may even want to get rubber soles to replace the soles on your leather shoes. This is a matter of preference, as many people will always prefer the leather sole. However, the rubber sole will last longer.

Add weatherproofing, and you will prolong the life of your shoes even further. Weatherproofing may not protect your shoes if you are constantly drenched in precipitation, but for the occasional walk in the rain it should make a big difference. If you do all these things to take care of your shoes, they will be with you for a long time to come.

When we visited Cancun, Mexico this past winter for our annual 5-week R&R trip, we were amazed at how many storefronts and clubs were completely empty. Senor Frog’s had virtually no business, and the shopping centers for tourists were so empty that they echoed. It was like walking through a very luxurious ghost town. Some stores in our local town back here in Colorado are starting to look the same way, but not all businesses.

There are three kinds of businesses that seem to thrive during any recession: discount stores, maintenance shops, and stores that recycle goods.

Discount Stores

Of course, Walmart is coming up roses with its low-price guarantee. The giant retailer increased its annual stock dividends by 15% in March, while other retailers are closing their doors. But other kinds of discount stores are also doing very well.

For instance, beauty schools all around the country are seeing a surge in business. People want to look good, even as the economy comes crashing down around them. At just $5-$7 per haircut and $35 for a hair color (versus $25 for a cut and $75 for a color at a regular salon), beauty schools are attracting customers like crazy. Discount stores empower consumers to stretch their hard-earned dollars, and are earning profits on their sheer volume of business.

Maintenance Shops

Drive past any new car dealer and you’ll see a shiny ghost town. No one wants to buy a gas-guzzling new car in this economy. Instead, people are doing their own oil changes and trying to make their older cars last longer. Car service centers are experiencing a surge in business, with people bring their cars in for more complicated maintenance issues. Experts predict that service centers will see even more business if the price of gas stays low, as many people plan to take road trips this summer as an inexpensive way to get away. Those road trippers will want their cars tuned up before hitting the road. Other maintenance-type businesses growing include all kinds of repair shops, from shoe repair to computer repair.

Recycled Goods

When it comes to saving money, consumers are thinking thrift shops, eBay, pawn shops, and auctions. Second-hand stuff has never been more valuable, and people are flocking to second-hand venues to both buy and sell. While major retailers like Macy’s are laying off thousands of employees, some thrift store chains are doubling the size of their staff. Experts are also predicting an increase in swap meets, better business on eBay and other auction sites, and a rosy future for pawn shops. Investing in recycling used goods is about to be very big business.

If you’re trying to save money on shoes, you’re not alone. Many people admit to having a penchant for shoe shopping and, given that designer shoes can cost hundreds of dollars, it’s definitely not a cheap habit.

The first strategy is to stick to classic shoe styles. It may be fun to pick up the latest trends, but, in a season or two, your shoes are going to look old and tired. Following this same line of thinking, stick to neutral tones. Matching your shoes with every shade of clothing that you own is a sure way to deplete your shoe budget. You’ll also want to add white into your equation, and a few accent colors. Once you select your colors, don’t purchase anything that is outside of that color palette.

It may sound ironic, but one of the best ways to save money on shoes is to spend more on each pair. If you purchase good quality shoes that will last you several years, you’ll actually end up saving money in the long run. For example, $30 pumps will wear out in just one season, meaning that you’ll be spending $120 a year for just one type of shoe. On the other hand, if you spend $200 on a pair of shoes that lasts you 5 years, you’re only spending $50 a year.

When you spend money on your shoes, it’s important to keep them in good condition. Get to know your local shoe repair store and take your shoes in on a regular basis to repair wear and tear. This will keep your shoes lasting even longer.

You can also save money by carefully selecting where you shop for shoes. You can buy the same designer pair of shoes for much less by looking on an auction site, searching in the online classified ads (such as Craiglist.org) or shopping at designer discount stores in your local area. You can also save a bundle by having a coupon code for an online shoe retailer. It’s not uncommon to find shoes marked down as much as 65 percent online and coupon codes can save you even more. Several of the big online shoe retailers offer free overnight shipping and free return shipping, if you need to send the selection back. If you know exactly what you want, and you are willing to shop around to find it, you’ll be able to save on your shoes.

Finally, shopping at the right time of year can also save you even more on shoes. For example, instead of purchasing spring shoes right when the season hits wait a few months and buy when prices begin to drop. Even better yet, wait until the clearance sales at the end of the season and purchase shoes for the following year.
